Gaffe-a-lot

We, like the rest of the media, have speculated on Palin's upcoming performance far more than Joe's, but we're not without our Joe-contemplations. My question: Can we turn off the gaffe machine as he claims he can here?

We'll see tonight.

And we'll also see a LIVEBLOG. So if you're near a computer while you watch the potential veeps go head to head, check out ladyfaces, where for the first time Morgan will be liveblogging with real liveblogging software that might actually work.

a break from the usual for a moment of longing

it was fitting that i left new york for new haven that weekend, seeing as a haven was exactly what my soul needed. i fell into the embrace of a friend and the familiar warmth surrounded me and took me back home even though i was somewhere i've never been before. we traded snippets of our lives over glasses of wine. it was calming. then new friends entered my life, as if sent by the divine to help me forget about my troubles. we danced the night away without a care.

when i woke the next morning joni mitchell's sweet voice was wafting through the room. it was a song i'd never heard before, but one that couldn't have been more appropriate if i had written it myself.

i can only remember the essence of the song. the specific lyrics were lost in my waking moments. now i'm dying to find it again, and lamenting that joni's catalog is so deep.

let's be honest...

let's be honest... this whole blog has just turned into the space where I share my favorite youtube videos and then talk about why I like them. and in that tradition...

Here's a great little music video. Now the song has been picked up by those cool cats over at Apple who seem to do a fantastic job of finding these great fresh songs and putting them in their commercials. Songs you wouldn't typically hear in commercials. (Feist probably never expected to have her songs used in ads).

But this isn't just about the song (which is very sweet and simple) it's about the video. It does it for me because I'm about to make a move, which means new environment, new decorations, and making a home for yourself.

I also love it when she paints on the pictures. Just enjoy

a bob dylan video and me ranting a bit

The recent death of celebrity/actor Heath Ledger has brought to the forefront an aspect of American culture that I don't understand particularly well. We, collectively, have an obsession with celebrity and celebrities that is strange and overwhelming. I have friends, good friends in fact, smart, well-adjusted, close friends, who were significantly affected by the death of this actor. I had a ton of respect for his work, but his death, to me, doesn't seem worthy of the attention it's received. Maybe it's just placed against the backdrop of what's happening in my life, given that my mother just lost someone whom she was very close to, but it seems unnatural to me that the passing of someone with whom you've never met or had anything more than a one-way interaction can cause such response, much less full grief.

That being said, I do have one celebrity that I think is pretty cool. I don't know if I'd be distraught if she unexpectedly died, but we share a birthday, so I've always liked her a bit more than the average actress. She's in this Bob Dylan music video. It's pretty cool.

dorks who are cooler than you

I take no credit for finding this. Pitchfork found it for me. I'm merely passing it along.

These kids are so dorky they're cool again. I love that. I would love to meet their parents.

blogotheque to the rescue, part II

I love how la blogotheque always brings musicians with simply beautiful songs and put them in simply beautiful settings to perform them, then puts it all on the internet for the world to share and love. This is another great example of that.

the interlude

So John Mayer and Justin Timberlake are definitely guilty pleasures of mine. For both music and hot-ness. This little guitar riff blows my mind though. The song to begin with is haunting and gorgeous, but I just love the way Mayer does this.

america's favorite train-wreck

This isn't necessarily high brow but this guy's southern accent completely cracks me up. I'm also a huge fan of Britney-hilarity.

Bonus points: my favorite Britney video ever. She's so nuts and I can't get enough of her accent. For real.
